Change Your Environment and You Change Your Life

About this episode

"You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with" – this sentence captures a fundamental truth about personal development. How strongly our environment actually influences our lives often becomes clear only when we consciously make a change.

The Move as a Turning Point

On June 30th, I moved to Berlin for a month into a shared apartment with Jacob Drachenberg and his brother. What was planned as a temporary change of location quickly turned into a powerful experiment in productivity and life transformation. After just a few days, it became clear to me: changing your environment can work real wonders.

The change was immediately noticeable. Living in an environment full of motivated, goal-oriented people acted like a natural productivity booster. It's fascinating how quickly you adapt to new rhythms and standards when your environment models them.

The July Challenge: Getting Up Early Together

The power of a productive environment became particularly evident in our spontaneous July Challenge. Together, we decided to get up by seven o'clock at the latest – every day, without exception. The catch: whoever doesn't make it has to donate 100 euros.

This simple rule transformed my entire daily rhythm. Not only did I wake up earlier than usual, but I also used the gained morning hours for important tasks. It's remarkable how much you can accomplish when your day starts productively at seven o'clock instead of nine or ten.

The challenge worked so well because it combined three crucial elements:

  • Accountability: Other people knew about my goal
  • Financial consequences: 100 euros donation for non-compliance
  • Social pressure: Nobody wanted to be the only one who failed

Why a Productive Environment is So Important

The experience confirmed an important insight: our environment shapes us more strongly than we often want to admit. When you surround yourself with people who get up early, work hard, and consistently pursue their goals, you automatically become more productive. It's almost impossible to remain lazy in a highly motivated environment.

Unfortunately, the opposite is equally true: if you spend your time mainly with people who have no clear goals or constantly make excuses, this inevitably rubs off on you. Your environment acts like an invisible magnet that pulls you either up or down.

The Practical Advice: Find the Right People

My most important insight from this month can be summarized in one sentence: Find people who are exactly where you want to be, and you will automatically become more productive.

This doesn't mean you should abandon your old friends. But it means consciously spending time with people who inspire and challenge you. People who have already achieved what you wish for. People whose work ethic and discipline you admire.

How This Changes Everything

The environment change influenced not only my daily habits but also my perspective on the podcast and future projects. In an environment full of entrepreneurs and creative minds, new ideas and collaborations emerge automatically.

It's amazing how your own ambition increases when you witness daily how other people turn their dreams into reality. What previously seemed impossible suddenly becomes a realistic goal.

Your Next Step

If you feel stuck in your current situation, ask yourself: Which people do you spend most of your time with? Do they pull you up or down? Do they inspire you or do they reinforce your comfort zone?

Changing your environment doesn't always mean you have to move. Sometimes it's enough to consciously make new contacts, visit co-working spaces, or attend events where you meet like-minded people.

Life is too short to spend it with the wrong people. Invest in an environment that lets you grow – it will be one of the best decisions of your life.
