My 6 Biggest Mistakes as an Entrepreneur and Self-Employed Person

About this episode

Unicorn Bakery is celebrating its birthday! What originally started as Jungunternehmer Podcast has now been running for over 6 years. Instead of just focusing on the successes, it's time for an honest assessment: What mistakes have I made as an entrepreneur, and what can you learn from them for your own entrepreneurial journey?

Mistake #1: Fear of What Others Might Think

One of my biggest mistakes was and still partially is the fear of what others might say. This worry often prevented me from making bold decisions or trying new approaches. Yet it's exactly this willingness to take risks that's often crucial for entrepreneurial success.

The reality is: people will always have opinions, no matter what you do. The question is whether you let the fear of criticism paralyze you or whether you pursue your path regardless.

Mistake #2: Treating the Podcast as a Hobby for Too Long

For years, I didn't take the podcast seriously enough, treating it more as a hobby than as a business. This mindset prevented me from making the necessary investments in time, money, and resources to develop the format professionally.

When you're running something entrepreneurially, you need to treat it like a business - with clear goals, strategies, and the willingness to invest.

Mistake #3: Getting Help Too Late

I didn't seek external help quickly enough when problems arose. Instead, I often tried to solve everything myself, which was not only inefficient but also cost valuable time.

Experts and consultants can help you take shortcuts and avoid mistakes that others have already made. Investments in professional help usually pay off quickly.

Mistake #4: Neglecting Physical Health

As an entrepreneur, you tend to put everything else above your own health. I neglected my physical health for a long time - a mistake that backfires in the long run.

Without physical fitness, not only does your well-being suffer, but also your performance and resilience as an entrepreneur. Regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle aren't luxury items, but investments in your most important business tool: yourself.

Mistake #5: Wanting to Handle Everything Alone

For a long time, I thought I had to and could handle all the work by myself. This attitude held me back and limited my potential. Successful businesses are built by teams, not lone wolves.

Delegation and building a strong team are essential for sustainable growth. You can't be the best at everything - but you can surround yourself with the best people.

Mistake #6: Believing Good Content Is Enough

For years, I believed that good content automatically leads to success and everything else would follow naturally. An expensive mistake! Even the best content needs marketing, sales, and strategic distribution.

Content is the foundation, but without proper marketing and distribution, even brilliant content won't achieve the reach it deserves.

Conclusion: Learning from Mistakes

These six mistakes taught me a lot and made me a better entrepreneur. The important thing isn't to avoid making mistakes - that's impossible. What matters is learning from mistakes and not repeating them.

What mistakes have you made in your entrepreneurial career? Often, it's exactly these experiences that help us grow the most.
