Building in Public #4: The Balancing Act of Maintaining Focus
About this episode
As a founder, you know the feeling: Sometimes events pile up, and suddenly you're juggling more balls than you can actually handle. That's exactly what happened to us during this intense event week – and I want to share these experiences with you.
A Week Full of Challenges
Our recent event week presented us with some interesting challenges. Organizing high-caliber networking events is no walk in the park – especially when you need to keep daily operations running simultaneously. Every detail must be perfect, from the guest list to catering to creating the perfect atmosphere for genuine connections.
What's often underestimated: It's not just about logistics. As a host, you bear the responsibility for ensuring all participants feel comfortable and can make valuable contacts. This requires not only organizational skills but also a keen sense for group dynamics.
Community Building Through Events
Despite all challenges, these events showed us one thing clearly: They are a powerful tool for strengthening the Unicorn Bakery Community. When founders, investors, and other startup ecosystem players meet in person, connections emerge that go far beyond digital contacts.
The energy generated at such events is palpable. Suddenly, podcast listeners become real community members, online contacts become business partners or even friends. These personal encounters are irreplaceable – they are the heart of our community strategy.
Insights from Bits & Pretzels
Parallel to our own events, I was also attending the Bits & Pretzels conference. This event is a highlight in the German startup calendar every year, and this time too, there were many valuable conversations and insights.
What particularly struck me: The quality of conversations keeps improving. It's less about superficial networking and more about genuine exchange. Founders openly share their challenges and successes – exactly what our podcast is about.
These experiences flow directly into new podcast recordings. The stories, tactics, and learnings I collect at such events become content that truly helps other founders.
The Balancing Act of Energy Management
Here we get to the core of the problem: How do you maintain focus as a founder when everything is happening around you? The answer lies in conscious energy management.
As an entrepreneur, you tend to always be "on." Every opportunity seems important, every meeting could be the decisive one. But this mindset quickly leads to burnout. I've learned that it's not about being everywhere, but about setting the right priorities.
Work-Life Balance as a Strategic Decision
Work-life balance is often a foreign concept for founders. But I now see it as a strategic decision: Those who want to be successful long-term must work sustainably. This also means consciously taking breaks and drawing boundaries.
In intensive phases like our event week, this is especially important. You must learn to distinguish between "important" and "urgent." Not every request deserves an immediate response, not every event justifies the founder's presence.
Lessons for Other Founders
What can you take away from our experiences? First: Events are a powerful tool for community building, but they require thoughtful planning and clear goals. Second: Your energy management is just as important as your time management. And third: Focus doesn't come from doing more, but from doing the right things.
The balancing act between growth and sustainability is one of the biggest challenges in founder life. But with the right approach, you can achieve both goals.
